Students' coursework is parceled out in a series of assignments. Coursework reminds students of their purpose in college. They have to write essays at all stages of their education, from essays of around 500 words to the 2,000 words upward required for higher degrees. • Coursework avoids arbitrary sampling (Palmer 1970: 57);
• Coursework requires coverage of a wider part of the syllabus rather than ‘topic-spotting’ for an exam (Gipps 1993: 33);
• Some skills and knowledge, especially those related to processes and methods of work, cannot be appropriately assessed in a terminal examination… Coursework assessment is ideally suited to the setting of real-life tasks and problems (City and Guilds 1984: 4);
• Coursework may increase the reliability of the assessment by providing wider evidence of the candidate’s achievement demonstrated on different occasions in samples of work which more fully represent the range of assessable abilities (SEC 1985: 5).

We do understand that high quality coursework is a sign of a highly motivated student.
